RUBBERBANDITS Straddling the comedy and music worlds like a tracksuit wearing colossus, Limerick’s Rubberbandits have manipulated and bullied their way to a level far beyond either their talent or intellect. Songs like “Bag of Glue”, “Too Many Gee” and “Up Da Ra” have made them the 12th most popular MySpace page in the whole of Ireland, beaten only by traditional Irish bands who aren’t even from here.
Their live show is basically a Prime Time special on the Limerick gangs, sniffing glue as an aphrodisiac when encountering larger ladies, horses…the list goes on. Blindboy Boat Club and Mr. Chrome will present a perspective on life that only two roadside fruit sellers who got a start selling mix tapes through local Limerick drug dealers can provide.
With prank phone calls, songs and riotous live shows Rubberbandits have emerged as the country’s surrealists beyond compare. Comedic genius or verbal diarrhoea. Decide for yourselves. A headline slot in the little big arena at Electric Picnic this year saw scenes of mass hysteria and upcoming tv appearances on Republic of Telly together with a practically sold out 20 date national tour have give them ego far in excess of their talent but sometimes thats just how it goes. It’s probably not unexpeced when in September The Rubberbandits joined a list including WB Yeats, Bill Clinton and Kofi Anan, Newt Gingrich and Salman Rushdie as speakers at the Phil in Trinity College. This ensured a roadblock on campus with security shutting down the building the minute they came off at 9pm, they also drew a picture of 2pac smoking a joint up against a wall in the visitors book which has first been signed by Jonathon Swift so they’re still keeping it real .
